Oscillometry test
Oscillometry is a sensitive measure of the respiratory system resistance, also described as mechanics of breathing.
The measurement is obtained by applying small pressure pulses to the airways while the subject breaths normally through a mouthpiece / filter.
Advantages of using Oscillometry to assess the respiratory system
- It is easy for the patient and the staff to perform.
- It requires almost no patient effort except for normal resting breathing for <60 seconds.
- Staff training is quick and easy.
- It can be used to assess the response to inhaled bronchodilators or other medications.
- Our pattern recognition and interpretive decision trees aid in identification of obstructive, restrictive, and other breathing abnormalities.
Oscillometry parameters
- R5: resistance at 5 Hz, R5-20: resistance between 5 and 20 Hz
- X: reactance
- Resonant Frequency: The point where X crosses zero line
- Other: R10, R20, AX, inspiratory and expiratory resistances
